Microstructure-Property-Relationships in High-performance Metallic Materials: From Advanced Steels to Magnetic Magnesium

In recent years the demand for high performance materials in many industrial branches has increased tremendously. In particular, light-weight design and  resource efficiency are two objectives that have triggered substantial research efforts focusing on materials with improved mechanical properties. A case in point is the advent of steels that feature twinning-induced or transformation-induced plasticity. Understanding the relevant microstructural phenomena that dominate the mechanical behavior is a key step towards wide industrial application of these advanced materials.  For future applications, however, high specific strength and good ductility will not suffice. Instead, advanced materials will have to feature both excellent mechanical properties along with new functional characteristics.
Given this scenario, the current-state-of-the-art for high performance steels will be analyzed. It will be demonstrated that the behavior of these materials is governed on different length scales and damage localization is a prominent feature that limits their mechanical performance.  Magnesium and its alloys are also advantageous based on the specific strength. Still, this material is not widely used. Recent research has, however, demonstrated that magnesium-based alloys can be produced that feature both good mechanical and magnetic properties.  Again, control of the microstructure is paramount and the consequences for processing and the ramifications for their use as sensors will be discussed.
